In an encounter between the ancient and the contemporary, the stage design was intended to follow the theatre’s morphology and transform it into a contemporary digital environment. A tower and columns formed with LED screens as opposed to the ancient theatre’s columns, a new contemporary altar in contrast to the existing one, cameras surveying the entire space and their cables transferring digital data spanning the koilon (theatron). A range of gestures follow the theatre’s architecture elements and are expressed in stark contrast: the ancient versus the contemporary, the analog versus the digital, earth and stones versus the lustrous black covers of the props. The first encounter with the ancient theatre’s space is a rare, critical moment, a profoundly enlightening experience during which new awareness emerges, certainties are eliminated and novel uncertainties are born.
