Bio

Born in Crete. She studied painting with H. Botsoglou and set design with G. Ziakas at the Athens School of Fine Arts. She has been Dionysis Fotopoulos’ assistant for stage and screen and also a performance designer for over 100 theatrical plays by S. Beckett, W. Shakespeare, A. Strindberg, H. Pinter etc., as well as for Ancient Greek dramas presented at the Epidaurus Ancient Theatre and other ancient theatres. She has also collaborated with various directors, such as Roula Pateraki, Giorgos Michailidis, Maya Liberopoulou, Dimitris Lignadis, Giorgos Kimoulis, Vaggelis Theodoropoulos, Stathis Livathinos, Nikos Mastorakis, Giannis Kakleas, Dimitris Kourtakis, Konstantinos Arvanitakis et.al. and has received several theatrical awards. She has also worked for 18 feature films and was awarded three times with the Greek State Film Award for Best Costume Design (Playing Parts by P. Portokalakis, Brides by Pantelis Voulgaris and URANYA by Costas Kapakas). She has also collaborated with Costa-Gavras for the show All Around Is Light for the New York Metropolitan Opera. She is co-curator of the Greek entry in the Exhibition of Countries and Regions at the Prague Quadrennial 2023.

My long appreciation of the technique old masters (set & costume designers) developed in the first half of the 20th century -focusing on motif instead of pattern- and my obsession with text accuracy led me to make Speech -theatrical speech- into a visual action, stitching Aeschylus’ verses on the heroes’ costumes for his play, The Persians. A chain of women (seamstresses, dressers, costume designer’s assistants and volunteers from Epidaurus) was formed to realise these “visual” texts with me, conveying their/our hands’ energy into costumes that required countless hours of work, producing something that for a long, creative time joined different specialties for a common goal. I think fondly of this performance, primarily for the synergy and cooperation of many women – not necessarily of theatrical expertise. In reality, a synergy chain was formed, a creative machine, transforming what used to be private and introvert into public and extrovert.
