The contrast of a fixed-form sculpture against the fluidity of the dramatic text shaped by the actors was the departure point for this set. On a visit to the National Theatre depository, we discovered a sculpture by Tina Parali, originally created for a Romeo and Juliet production thirty years ago on this same stage. This “archaeological” discovery led to a decision that shaped the show artistically: […] we decided to improvise with found material from within the actual “body” of the National Theatre. Assisted by its staff and with great affection towards the institution’s history, we drew up a series of “archaeological” finds: sculptures from previous productions, the old velvet curtain of the Central Stage (unused since 1999), Dionysis’ Fotopoulos’ timber gates (1976), deposed headlights, numerous costumes from the wardrobe and mannequins from the costume exhibition presented at the National Gallery of Greece in 2003. This project forms an encounter with the multiple versions of one’s “self”.
