The set was a house, the house of Jenufa, in the edge of the forest. As her mental state deteriorates, the house is crumbling, the forest is taking over and by the end all elements have collapsed and become an abstract space leaving the protagonists alone on stage. This is a piece I have always wanted to design and Janάček is one of my favourite composers. For years, GNO directors have been telling me that he is difficult for Greek audiences. What we managed to achieve was a great connection to the audience, which proved that the stories of Janάček’s women speak directly to a Greek audience, as indeed to all audiences across the world.
