That year, the opera had exhausted its budget for sets on its first full Ring Cycle, so I had to make a show with “virtually no sets”. I grasped this challenge with great interest and created a symbolic world whose primary elements were: placement of the individual and (its) society in space, colour, light and shadow. Within this highly stylised world, the only realistic element was a large stain of blood on Lucia’s dress in the infamous madness scene. It is a rare opportunity for a set designer to be asked to create a scenography with no sets and this Lucia was such an opportunity. Through close collaboration with my good friend, the lighting designer George Tellos, we managed to create a variety of spaces mainly by placing and lighting the performers in various formats and by manipulating some moving light beams that projected on theatrical smoke particles. The result was a non-corporeal scenography that amplified actions and reactions and their significance in time and space.
