We transposed the familiar fairy-tale-opera to a divided Berlin just before the Fall of the Wall in 1989. The two siblings leave their drab East German apartment block to get lost in a menacing ‘forest’ of tank traps in front of the Wall. They subsequently get drugged by a punk Sandman and they experience History and the Fall of the Wall as an acid trip. Later they get woken up to a New World by a fitness fanatic Dew Fairy. Stepping through a hole in the Wall they get seduced by the Witch of the West and her chocolate capitalism, only to discover what lies behind the pink affluence: a depressing factory with zombie workers operating a conveyor belt in front of a new Wall of packing cardboard boxes. Through collaboration and solidarity, the children dispatch the Witch in her cauldron of chocolate and cause the collapse of the cardboard box Wall, rejecting their parents’ greed.
