How could I create an image of our planet, in a climate crisis and conflict over sustainability? In such a way that would avoid being apocalyptic and “scary” for the younger view? Using Vivaldi’s work as the starting point, I worked with recyclable and non-recyclable materials to create costumes that demonstrate the lack of sustainability and over consumption of everyday objects, but which also paid tribute to our childhood memories of nature’s 4 seasons. I pondered: What if our relationship with nature was only through memory? If there were no trees would we adjust to a forest of drinking straws? If there were no leaves would we adjust to plastic bags rustle in the wind? How can we resist nature’s irresistible ability to create form and composition through the repetition of thousands of motifs? Knowing that the repeated use of hundreds of everyday objects is environmentally unsustainable? This project gave me the rare opportunity to explore this paradox.
